So the idea of Keanu Reeves directing movies wasn't the most exciting news I'd ever heard, but this new technology he's pioneering looks pretty amazing.

The camera will catch the kind of footage which normally has to be filled in by CG. Now I actually think the level of badmouthing CG gets i's pretty ridiculous sometimes. When you compare the long history of practical special effects with the, so far pretty short, history of CG visual effects, the progress CG is making is quite astounding. However, CG modelling of the face has always been pretty tough and if there are ways to capture genuine footage of martial arts fights instead that's definitely preferable. If CG artists don't have to waste time using CG to digitially reconstruct a fighter's face, they'll have more freedom to do more interesting stuff with the live action footage these cameras capture. It's just great news for cinema in general.

And yeah, Keanu Reeves knows Kung Fu. (Obligatory reference is obligatory.)

First of all, a couple of movies I thought were going to be released in 2013 but have actually (apparently) been moved forward and will now be in cinemas at the end of 2012. YAY!

The Wachowskis' "Cloud Atlas" has apparently been moved forward to October this year. It's starring Tom Hanks and apparently it's got a big budget. This could be interesting.

Another film that's now apparently being released in 2012 is "Gambit". Expected in November. The main reason to be interested in this one is that it's written (not directed) by the Coen Brothers. It's also starring Colin Firth and Alan Rickman, which is pretty cool.

These really belong in my other list, but this is the first I've heard that they're coming out in 2012.
Check out my list of "movies to look out for in 2012" here.

So, in ascending order (i.e. the best is at the bottom of the list), you'll find below...

My Top 39 Movies To Look Out For In 2013!

Singularity
(11/11/13 - USA)
"A young man's body is made up a swarm of nanobots, giving him all sorts of powers." Roland Emmerich doing a sci-fi film rather than a disaster film? I don't think any of his films have really matched his debut "Universal Soldier". Perhaps this'll finally manage it?

Tomb Raider
I loved Angelina Jolie's stint as Tomb Raider and think she tried her best with the horrendous second film. Not sure that Olivia Wilde can follow in her footsteps, but I'll give it a shot.

Silent Night Of The Living Dead
(??/11/13)
Absolutely crazy-sounding horror comedy. Not an awful lot of hope that this will be good, but Tom Savini's on board so I'll have my fingers crossed anyway....

It's mainly the idea of Bowser being in a movie that sold me on this. Doesn't look like he does much, but I don't care. :)

Wreck-it Ralph at a "videogame badguys anonymous meeting"...

There's been a lot of Dark Knight Rises posters now, but that's the first one that's made me go "wow" since the first one they released.

I'll be following this up with a whole list of movies I'm looking forward to over 2013 and 2014, but first of all let's start with the ones that are being released first. Here are the movies I'm currently looking forward to most coming out this year.

7 Movies in 2012 (technically already released)

Bellflower
A couple are building a killer car and hoping for a Mad Max style apocalypse? Whatever this film is about it sounds utterly crazy and I am extremely intrigued.

15 Movies Still To Come In 2012

Prometheus
Ridley Scott sort of does a prequel to Alien only not really.... only blatantly it is. *scratches head* Here's hoping that some cinemas near me are prepared to release this in 2D because otherwise I'll have to wait til the DVD release (hmmph!).

I've heard a lot of negative comments about this. Now actually when you look at the synopsis for the book, I can understand why you might be negative about it. However, just looking at the teaser I think this looks fantastic.

One of my favourite classic horror movies is "Invasion of the Body Snatchers". The remake in the late seventies is pretty good too and Robert Rodriguez' teen comedy "The Faculty" which deals with the same subject is also pretty good. The subject matter of John Carpenter's "The Thing" has a similar theme. It's just a trend within sci-fi that really appeals to me. However, the gist of these stories always tends to be the same.

What really intrigues me about this trailer is that this actually appears to be like a sequel to Invasion of the Body Snatchers rather than a re-telling. Of course, the problem is that Stephanie Meyer might not have the imagination to follow-on successfully from one of the greatest science fiction stories of all time. Still, the teaser trailer does it's job very well in making me excited about what COULD be even if the final product disappoints.

The director Andrew Niccol is responsible for "In Time" (which I haven't seen yet, but really wasn't received well by critics), but his previous directing work includes Gattaca and Lord of War (and in both cases he wrote the screenplays) and he also wrote the script for "The Truman Show". If anyone can adapt Stephanie Meyer's sci-fi novel in an interesting way, surely it's got to be him? Still, I'm not sure how they are going to convey the interaction between a not-quite-as-dormant-as-expected mind and its influence on a controlling alien host. The basic gist of the love story (um...) sounds pretty much unfilmable. But then again, all the more reason to be excited if it works (I guess...)

For now, I'm giving this the benefit of the doubt. I may well change my mind when a longer trailer comes out (and they start trying to convey the love story elements), but until then I am really excited about "The Host" and will happily enjoy considering the potential this project has.

The first "too good to be true" trailer of 2012. Posts with a "too good to be true" tag feature movie trailers for movies that I am pretty much judging by the trailer alone. If I'm already convinced a movie is going to be good i'll generally either not watch the trailer or not care what the trailer is like.

When I post a trailer here with this tag, it's not the names involved that caused me to put it up. Instead it's the contents of the trailer itself. I fully recognise that in most cases this is doomed for disappointment, hence the choice of tag.

The trailer above features Paul Giamatti (which tends to be a good sign) and absolutely bizzare and weird stuff galore. This can either be awesome or dreadful. I'm not sure how it could just be "alright". Check it out. :)

Bonus: Recap of last year's "too good to be true" trailer choices.

Naturally if you want to see what trailers intrigued me last year, you just need to click on the tags. However, here's a neat little list with a recap on whether I saw them and whether I'm still interested now the reviews have come in:

MS One Security Maximum

REC 3: Genesis

(video link)

MyGeekBlasphemy had an earlier version of the MS One Security Maximum trailer that put more focus on the interrogation of Guy Pearce's central character, but did a much less impressive job promoting the movie as a whole. Seeing a bit more of the movie's central premise this is looking pretty exciting.

Meanwhile I have been waiting for REC 3 for a long while now. One of the two creators involved in the first two REC movies is missing from this one, but the REC series has been such an interesting series so far that I'm prepared to risk it. I absolutely cannot wait for this!

After the somewhat cartoonish bird at the beginning, everything looks fantastic. The effects look amazing, the film looks exciting and I'm finding myself taking a retelling of Snow White seriously. What's more, the cast looks pretty good from Charlize Theron (In The Valley of Elah, Monster) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor) in leading roles, to various smaller roles played by Eddie Marsan, Toby Jones, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost and Bob Hoskins.

The problem? Kristen biting-my-lips-means-I'm-acting Stewart. She had me half-believing she could act in Adventureland (though I had my suspicions), but the double-whammy of the Twilight movies and Into The Wild seems to have confirmed that she's a bit pants really. Now it's possible that this is a more suitable role and the director working on his debut feature will get the best out of her, but I'm not holding my breath.

But damn that trailer looks good....

(video link)

This totally new to you, like it was to me? I think this is an idea that's being approached in a really interesting way. I'm a bit puzzled as to who's holding the camera during all of this, but it's certainly a topic not yet covered in any found footage movies I've heard of. The effects were effective, but it doesn't look like they'll detract from character development. Ooooh and now that we've spent over two minutes with these guys without them irritating the hell of me, I'm reckoning they'll certainly be more interesting than anyone in Cloverfield.

As you'll see from the tags, this is a "too good to be true" entry. That means this a movie being judged entirely by the trailer. (Or, in a few cases, names attached mean I'm expecting it to be good AND it's got a good trailer.) In this case I really have no idea if it'll be any good, but I really think the trailer shows promise. What do you all think?
philosoraptor42: (Default)

(video link)

Okay, I'm actually really excited now. All the news about this movie has been pretty dismissive, but as each new trailer has given us more and more glimpses of the effects I'm been getting more and more interested. It looks like the new CGI is actually capturing the right look for the Thing. Sure, it probably won't be better than John Carpenter's version, but seeing as that is one of my favourite movies of all time, am I surprised?

The fact is that The Thing really captured my imagination and the promise that I could get more of that magic is really hard for me to ignore.

The basic gist of the year so far is that the only films I've thought were absolutely fantastic are "Source Code", "Submarine" and "Kung Fu
Panda 2". Which one do you think will win "Best Picture" at the Oscars? :P

Okay, so the real contenders don't come until later, so I thought I'd check out what was still to come. I was surprised to
see that I'm actually really excited about a lot of different movies which are all coming to cinemas in the UK this year. Unfortunately I'm
not sure that this is going to make me terribly pleased with the year as a whole.

Then again, there are 18 titles on this list (though the last three are kind of "honourable mentions" since they don't actually have a release date for the UK yet). See what you think. The full list is on imdb here if you want links.)

The Troll Hunter
: 09/09/2011

The trailer reminds me of the trailer for "Rare Exports" which a lot of people seemed pretty impressed with. It just looks like great fun, if not high art.

Oscar? Hardly. Wrong sort of movie, I'd have thought.

What do you think about this selection?

From the director of "Let The Right One In" and an absolutely incredible cast. This looks amazing!

Okay, so I haven't seen the movie yet. Haven't been to the cinema in a while now, but after some remarkably positive reviews I'm actually seriously planning on seeing "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" some time next week.

I'm about to go through some of my views on the Planet of the Apes movie franchise. But don't worry if you haven't seen them yet. I'm planning on having minimal spoilers. If you've seen the trailer for Rise and you've seen the front cover of the DVD for the first movie then you probably don't have too much to worry about.

So here comes the interesting bit. What with Rise having already been a success, they director is (unsurprisingly) willing to consider a sequel. He sounds quite excited about the possibility of what he calls "Full Metal Jacket with apes". The idea would seem to be that they spend rather longer sorting out how we get from an ape uprising to a genuine Planet of the Apes, possibly without going down the 'complete nuclear holocaust' route.

Presuming I don't hate Rise of the Planet of the Apes, I'm actually pretty excited. :)

I wasn't a huge fan of Dogma, though I thought there were some good bits. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is generally recognised as being a low point and from what I've heard Cop Out actually sunk even lower. It was looking like the best bet with Kevin Smith movies were if they had the word "Clerks" somewhere in the title.

So imagine my surprise when I got to the end of the "Red State" trailer and found myself thinking "wow". Just to warn you though, the first 30 seconds is deceptive. Towards the end of the trailer John Goodman is gruffly talking into a mobile phone saying "You said that this was going to be a simple in and out sir? Simple just shit itself." By that point, all expectations you might have had at the beginning have drastically shifted.

I'm not sure that Quentin Tarantino's quote is necessarily a guarantee of quality. I think he just loves anything with Michael Parks in it and, I must say, it looks like Michael Parks is probably pretty awesome in this.

The actual trailer didn't have me that impressed, but this clip has me a lot more excited. Conan The Barbarian being taught by Ron Perlman? Okay, sounds good. Then what happens next is totally awesome.

Normally my "too good to be true" entries are movie trailers that impressed me. In this case, I thought I'd make an exception. This poster looks amazing.
